Moisture management: Solutions for laundry odors and wall dampness

Common household moisture issues can lead to unpleasant odors and structural damage. For laundry, persistent smells in clothes and towels often stem from leaving wet items in the washing machine for too long, using excessive detergent, or failing to dry fabrics completely before folding. Maintaining the washing machine by cleaning the door seal and detergent drawer is also essential to prevent microorganism growth.

Regarding home maintenance, wall moisture can be caused by condensation, poor ventilation, or hidden leaks. A cost-effective method to identify the source is the ‘aluminum foil test’: by taping foil to a wall for 24 to 48 hours, homeowners can determine if moisture is coming from the room (condensation on the outside of the foil) or from external leaks (condensation on the inside of the foil). Addressing ventilation and insulation is key to preventing mold and peeling paint.
