Household maintenance tips for preventing and clearing clogged drains

Clogged drains are a common household issue caused by the gradual buildup of debris in pipes. In kitchens, grease, food scraps, and soap scum are primary culprits, while bathrooms often face blockages from hair and personal care products.

To prevent clogs, it is recommended to scrape food remains into the trash before washing dishes and to avoid pouring cooking fat or sauces directly down the drain. Regular maintenance, such as pouring hot water down the sink or using a drain strainer, can help. A natural cleaning method involves pouring baking soda followed by white vinegar into the drain, letting it sit for fifteen minutes, and rinsing with hot water.

If a blockage occurs, simple solutions include using a plunger or cleaning the siphon by placing a bucket underneath and unscrewing the trap. However, if water fails to drain entirely or if problems recur frequently, professional assistance may be necessary to avoid pipe damage or water damage.
