Household maintenance tips for towels and carpets

Common household habits can lead to unpleasant odors in linens and carpets. To prevent towels from smelling, experts suggest avoiding hanging them on hooks, which causes the middle section to remain bunched and damp. Instead, towels should be spread across a bar to allow air circulation. Shaking out towels after use and ensuring they are completely dry before storage can also prevent the buildup of bacteria and mold.

For carpet maintenance, a mixture of baking soda and 3% hydrogen peroxide can be used to neutralize odors and remove certain stains. The recommended method involves vacuuming the area, testing the solution on a hidden spot to check for discoloration, and gently dabbing the stain rather than rubbing it. However, caution is advised as hydrogen peroxide may bleach colors or damage delicate fibers like silk and wool.
