Household management: Understanding pest survival and waste sorting

Common household issues regarding hygiene and waste management are highlighted through the biological behavior of pests and the complexities of domestic recycling.

Cockroaches, specifically species like Blattella germanica and Blatta orientalis, can inhabit clean homes because they prioritize water and shelter over food. While an adult cockroach can survive a month without solid food, they cannot survive more than a week without moisture. Critical moisture sources in clean environments include refrigerator condensation trays, leaking under-sink pipes, stagnant water in plant saucers, and condensation on cold water pipes.

Regarding waste disposal, confusion often leads to improper sorting in residual waste bins. Many items that people assume are recyclable, such as plastic pens or ceramic pieces, often cannot be processed alongside standard packaging like plastic bottles or glass jars. Proper disposal requires distinguishing between materials that belong in standard recycling streams and those that require dedicated collection or must go into the residual waste bin.
