Household methods for preventing and eliminating fruit flies

Fruit flies often enter kitchens via store-bought produce, such as bananas, in the form of microscopic eggs or larvae. To prevent infestations, it is recommended to avoid purchasing damaged or overly ripe fruit. Washing the peels of fruits like bananas with a mixture of water and a small amount of vinegar can help remove invisible eggs without damaging the fruit.

Several household methods exist to eliminate existing fruit fly populations. Effective tactics include creating a trap using a mixture of water, dish soap, and vinegar to break surface tension, or using red wine covered with plastic wrap containing small holes. Other methods involve using banana peels as a natural trap, using a hairdryer to catch them, or ensuring that organic waste is disposed of regularly to remove breeding grounds.
