Household pest management: identifying and preventing infestations

As temperatures drop, households face increased risks from various pests, including bedbugs and rodents.

Bedbugs can be identified by reddish-brown, oval-shaped bodies and characteristic odors. Common signs include grouped or aligned bites on the skin, small blood spots on linens, dark stains on mattresses, and discarded exoskeletons or white eggs in crevices. To prevent spreading an infestation, experts recommend washing textiles at a minimum of 60°C for 30 minutes and vacuuming mattresses, bed frames, and room corners thoroughly. It is advised not to move items between rooms during an infestation to avoid further spread.

Rodents often seek warmth and food inside homes, basements, and crawl spaces during the autumn and winter months. Signs of a mouse infestation include droppings near food, shredded paper or fabric used for nesting, gnawed packaging, and musty odors. Because mice can enter through holes as small as 6 millimeters, it is recommended to inspect kitchens, utility areas, and entry points. Prevention methods include sealing small gaps with steel wool and caulk, or using heavy metal mesh and cement for larger openings.
