Household pest prevention tips for autumn

As autumn approaches, homeowners are advised on natural and preventative methods to manage common household pests such as spiders, flies, and mice.

To deter spiders, flies, moths, and ants, strong-smelling spices can be placed near entry points like windowsills and doors. Spices such as cinnamon, star anise, and cloves are effective; specifically, cloves contain eugenol, an aromatic compound that repels flies and disrupts the sensory receptors of spiders.

Regarding rodents, experts warn that mice often seek warmth and food in homes during colder months. To prevent infestations, homeowners should inspect properties for small gaps around walls, pipes, and wires. Maintaining cleanliness by storing dry goods, flour, and pet food in airtight containers and managing kitchen waste is essential to remove food sources that attract mice.
