Household tips for drying towels and removing musty odors

Various household methods are being explored to address common laundry issues such as damp odors and slow drying times.

To combat damp-smelling kitchen towels, using a microwave can provide rapid drying in under five minutes. This method is suggested as an alternative to drying towels on radiators, which can lead to stagnant moisture and bacterial growth due to poor air circulation. For the microwave method to work safely, towels must be 100% cotton without metallic patterns.

For towels that retain a musty smell even after washing and drying, the issue is often caused by a biofilm of detergent residue, bacteria, and limescale within the fibers. While baking soda can help neutralize odors and avoiding fabric softeners can improve absorption, these methods may not fully eliminate persistent smells. White vinegar is noted as a highly effective solution for breaking down these deposits and eradicating odors.
