Household tips for long-term vegetable and onion storage
Effective food preservation techniques can extend the shelf life of vegetables without the need for expensive storage containers. For onions, a traditional method involves using nylon stockings to create a ventilated chain. By placing an onion in the toe of the stocking and tying a knot before adding the next, air can circulate continuously, and any rotting onion is isolated from the others. Onions should be dried in a well-ventilated area for at least two weeks until the outer skin is papery before storage in a cool, dark, and dry location.
For leafy greens and herbs in the refrigerator, using paper towels can help manage moisture levels. Wrapping greens loosely in paper towels before placing them in a container helps absorb excess moisture that causes mold, while preventing the vegetables from drying out completely. Similarly, for root vegetables like carrots, removing the leafy tops can prevent them from drawing moisture away from the root. The key to successful storage is maintaining a balance of moisture to prevent both rot and wilting.
