Home maintenance tips to prevent window condensation and mold

Homeowners are facing increased risks of mold, rot, and condensation as temperatures drop. Experts suggest several practical methods to manage indoor moisture and improve energy efficiency.

To combat condensation, Neil McKenzie of Halton Stairlifts recommends using coarse salt in small containers on window sills to absorb moisture from the air. Additionally, regular ventilation is critical; opening windows wide for approximately 10 to 20 minutes daily can effectively replace humid air with dry air without deeply chilling the walls.

For those using PVC or wooden windows, adjusting the hardware can prevent drafts. Using a 4mm Allen key to turn the eccentric pins on the window sash to the 'winter mode' ensures a tighter seal against the frame. Other preventative measures include keeping curtains open at night to allow air circulation around the glass and ensuring rooms are ventilated immediately after showering or cooking.
