Housemarque and Nixxes collaborate on Saros boss design

Developers Housemarque and Nixxes have detailed their collaborative process for creating the boss encounters in the game Saros. The partnership divided responsibilities between the two studios to balance creative vision with technical execution.

Housemarque provided the core creative direction, including the game world, combat language, visual concepts, and the signature bullet-hell elements. Nixxes focused on the technical implementation, handling encounter design, animations, environments, lighting, and boss behavior.

Each boss encounter is designed as a staged event rather than a simple enemy with increased health. These battles typically last between three and eight minutes and feature three distinct phases that alter the encounter's appearance and gameplay mechanics. The design aims to challenge players through arena transformations, environmental hazards, and specific attack patterns that require intentional movement, such as parrying, dashing, and jumping.
