Houseplant care and pest prevention tips

Homeowners are advised to take specific precautions when moving balcony plants indoors to prevent pest infestations. Moving plants directly into warm, dry indoor environments can cause pests like aphids, spider mites, and fungus gnats to multiply rapidly due to the lack of natural predators and the presence of heated air.

To mitigate this, experts suggest a process of gradual acclimatization in a cool area like a hallway and performing a thorough inspection outdoors. One recommended method to remove hidden pests like centipedes, earwigs, and larvae from the soil is to submerge the entire root ball in a bucket of water for several minutes.

Additionally, certain houseplants can serve as hiding spots for bed bugs. While bed bugs do not feed on plants and do not live in the soil, they may hide on leaves, stems, or around the base of pots. Plants with dense, spreading foliage placed near beds or nightstands are particularly noted as potential shelters for these insects.
