Houseplant care and their impact on indoor air quality

Proper air circulation is a critical factor for the health of indoor plants. Unlike outdoor environments with natural breezes, indoor air can become stagnant, especially when plants are grouped together. Providing air movement can encourage thigmomorphogenesis, a process where plants respond to mechanical stimulation by developing stronger, sturdier stems.

Additionally, air circulation helps reduce conditions favorable to plant diseases by preventing moisture buildup. Regarding indoor environments, certain plants can influence humidity and air quality. Peace lilies are effective at removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like benzene and formaldehyde, though they add humidity to the air and are better suited for dry rooms.

In contrast, English ivy and snake plants are better suited for damp or humid areas. English ivy thrives in humid environments and filters pollutants, while snake plants release very little moisture, making them ideal for preventing increased dampness in a room.
