Houseplant care: humidity management and climbing support

Maintaining proper humidity is essential for houseplant health, though common practices like misting may be ineffective. While tropical plants such as ferns and calatheas require higher moisture levels, succulents and snake plants are adapted to drier environments. Misting provides only temporary moisture and can potentially encourage fungal or bacterial diseases if leaves remain wet in poorly ventilated areas. Using a humidifier is often a more consistent method for increasing atmospheric moisture.

For climbing plants like Monstera and Philodendron, moss poles serve as vertical supports that encourage aerial root growth. Because traditional moss poles dry out quickly, self-watering versions can be utilized to maintain consistent moisture. These systems may use a hollow center for top-down watering or a wick to draw moisture from a reservoir, providing a more stable environment for climbing varieties.
