Houseplants for indoor air purification and VOC absorption

Indoor air quality is a significant concern as people spend approximately 90% of their time in enclosed environments where pollutants like formaldehyde, benzene, and toluene can concentrate. Certain houseplants act as biological filters through a process known as phytoremediation, absorbing harmful substances and releasing oxygen.

Effective species for air purification include Pothos (Epipremnum aureum), which absorbs formaldehyde and benzene; Boston Fern, which targets formaldehyde and xylene; and Dracaena, which filters benzene and trichloroethylene. Other beneficial plants include English Ivy, which can reduce pollutants by up to 60% in 24 hours in well-ventilated rooms, and the Peace Lily, which absorbs ammonia and benzene.

While plants are effective at absorbing low concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and regulating local humidity, they have limited impact on fine particulate matter (PM2.5) or carbon dioxide levels compared to mechanical HEPA filters or controlled ventilation. For environments experiencing Sick Building Syndrome, professional ventilation and source reduction remain the primary recommendations.
