Housing activists end campsite protest in Arrecife
The Assembly for the Right to Housing has ended its seven-day occupation of José Ramírez Cerdá Park in Arrecife, Lanzarote. Activists voluntarily removed their tents following warnings from the Arrecife City Council regarding potential economic sanctions for violating municipal ordinances that prohibit camping in public spaces. The park is classified as a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC).
Despite the removal of the tents, the collective described the move as “strategic” and stated that their struggle for affordable housing continues. The group plans to maintain its mobilization through weekly assemblies in the same park and the creation of working groups. Additionally, the assembly has announced its support for a general housing strike scheduled for November 11.
