Housing affordability challenges and relocation assistance

A global report titled ‘Home at What Cost?’ by Habitat for Humanity International highlights the significant sacrifices households make to afford housing. According to the study, 75% of respondents reported reducing at least one expense in the past year to cover housing costs. These compromises include reducing food spending (33%), using emergency savings (32%), working additional hours (31%), and delaying healthcare (13%). The report notes that housing affordability impacts financial health and well-being, with nearly half of respondents fearing a single unexpected expense could jeopardize their housing stability.

In France, specific relocation assistance programs exist but vary by eligibility. The CAF moving grant is available to large families with at least three dependent children, provided the new residence qualifies for APL or ALF benefits. Notably, the ‘Mobili-Pass’ aid from Action Logement was discontinued as of July 1, 2023, after its budget was exhausted. Individuals may still seek internal mobility support from specific employers to help manage transition costs.
