Housing challenges persist across various Italian regions
Italy is facing diverse housing challenges ranging from high vacancy rates to difficulties in accessing the rental market and the need for social housing interventions.
In the Gallura region of Sardinia, a Nomisma study reveals a significant contradiction: while the area sees high real estate transactions and some of the highest rental rates on the island, 53% of homes in the Olbia-Tempio province remain unoccupied. This high vacancy rate contrasts sharply with the difficulty residents face in finding affordable housing.
In Aosta, the Habita Aosta project has completed its first year, assisting 100 people—primarily foreign residents with stable employment—in navigating the private rental market. The initiative, which has been extended until 2028, aims to build trust between tenants and landlords to overcome barriers to housing access.
Meanwhile, in Cremona, the municipal government is planning to recover 31 apartments in the Duemiglia area to increase the supply of social housing with controlled rents. The project, estimated to cost nearly 2 million euros, involves renovating buildings to create larger units, such as three- and four-room apartments, to better accommodate larger families.
