Australia banks revise rate hike forecasts following inflation

Following higher-than-expected July inflation data, major Australian banks have revised their interest rate forecasts. While the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) held rates steady in August, economists and financial institutions are debating the timing of the next hike.

NAB has shifted its prediction to a September rate increase. Conversely, Commonwealth Bank and ANZ have updated their outlooks to suggest a hike is more likely in November. Other institutions, such as Judo Bank, have taken a more aggressive stance, forecasting increases in both September and November.

The debate is complicated by conflicting economic signals. While headline inflation was reported at 3.5 per cent, there are concerns regarding softening momentum in the labor market, wage growth, and housing demand. The housing sector remains a critical factor, as it accounts for a significant portion of annual inflation despite its smaller share of the total CPI basket.
