Housing crisis in Mallorca sparks debate over construction policies

The housing crisis in the Balearic Islands has prompted different political and social proposals to address the shortage of affordable homes. Vox spokesperson for the Consell de Mallorca, Toni Gili, has proposed increasing land availability, accelerating licensing processes, and reducing bureaucracy and tax pressure to stimulate construction.

Gili noted that the housing deficit in the Balearic Islands may be as high as 30,000 units, significantly higher than the official figure of 17,000. He argued that the current imbalance between high demand and low supply makes it increasingly difficult for young people and workers to afford housing in Mallorca.

In contrast, other perspectives suggest that the solution lies in the creation of a public construction company. This approach would focus on building and renting entirely public housing, independent of private real estate interests, to address the needs of a growing population in a territory with limited land.
