Housing crisis in Spain highlighted by HBO series 'Ravalear

The HBO series ‘Ravalear’ has gained attention for its depiction of the housing crisis and the influence of vulture funds. The show’s themes mirror real-world social tensions currently driving political campaigns and public mobilizations.

A significant catalyst for recent housing protests in Spain was the case of Mari Carmen Abascal, an 87-year-old woman in Madrid. After residing in her home for 70 years under an old rent agreement, she was evicted following a price increase by new owners. Following intense social mobilization, the company attempting the eviction withdrew, but Abascal subsequently passed away in the hospital.

The difficulty of accessing housing is noted as a cross-border issue, with similar themes appearing in other media, such as the Norwegian miniseries ‘The Architect’, which depicts the struggle with rental prices in Oslo.
