Housing instability reported in Caracas and Cuajimalpa
In Caracas, Venezuela, residents of Block 9 in the Lomas de Urdaneta residential complex are facing housing insecurity following seismic activity. Although the main columns and primary infrastructure remain stable, the building has been assigned a ‘red label’ by the Presidential Commission on Habitability, indicating severe damage and high risk. Internal issues include fractured beams, cracked staircases, masonry damage, and broken pipes. Repairs are estimated to cost $60,000, an amount the low-income residents cannot afford due to inflation and the high cost of living.
In Mexico City, families in the Cuajimalpa borough are reporting increasing instances of illegal property invasions. In the Contadero area, approximately 300 people reportedly entered a 6,800-square-meter private property illegally to begin construction. Residents claim invaders use tactics such as changing locks and falsifying documents during the temporary absence of owners. Local authorities state that an investigation is open and negotiations are being handled by the Mexico City Government’s Secretariat of Citizen Concertation.
