Housing unions call for action against evictions in Spain
Housing unions in Spain are mobilizing to prevent evictions and address residential instability. In Bilbao, the Azet union is calling for a protest to stop the eviction of a resident who ceased rent payments during the pandemic due to income loss. The tenant's legal counsel has filed an appeal for suspension based on the 'Maricarmen decree' for vulnerable individuals, supported by municipal social services reports.
In Navarre, more than 500 families face uncertainty as Testa, a real estate subsidiary of the US-based Blackstone fund, has notified tenants in Pamplona and its surrounding areas that it will not renew rental contracts. The conflict affects 507 homes in neighborhoods such as Etxabakoitz and San Jorge. Housing syndicates, including the Euskal Herriko Etxebizitza Sindikatuen Sarea, are demanding public intervention to prevent these families from losing their homes and are calling for the properties to be integrated into the public housing stock.
