Houston Astros owner Jim Crane links Joe Espada's future to postseason results
Houston Astros owner Jim Crane has stated that the team's performance during the postseason will be a key factor in determining the future of manager Joe Espada. Espada's current contract is set to expire at the conclusion of the current season, and Crane confirmed there have been no recent discussions regarding a contract extension.
Crane noted that the team's success or failure in October will be considered, stating, “All positives are positives, and all negatives are negatives.” This decision follows recent organizational changes, including the departure of general manager Dana Brown on August 24. Crane clarified that Brown's exit was a planned decision not to renew his contract and did not negatively impact the team's performance.
Following Brown's departure, management responsibilities were distributed among assistant general managers Charles Cook, Gavin Dickey, and Connor Huff, alongside senior adviser Jeff Bagwell. Despite these executive shifts, the Astros secured the American League West division title, becoming the first team in MLB history to reach the postseason with a .500 record (81-81).
