Houston Astros' Tatsuya Imai faces uncertain future in starting rotation

Houston Astros rookie pitcher Tatsuya Imai has struggled to stay in the team's starting rotation after multiple outings in which he failed to record three outs. In his last start, he recorded only two outs, walked four batters and allowed a hit and a balk, contributing to a 6‑4 win but raising questions about his role. Manager Joe Espada said it is premature to discuss a roster move, noting the team will review video and consider options, including possibly using right‑hander Peter Lambert or moving Imai to the bullpen.

Imai, a former NPB All‑Star who signed a three‑year, $54 million contract, holds a 5.83 ERA through 15 starts and has a high walk rate. His inconsistency has strained the Astros bullpen, forcing relievers such as AJ Bluhaugh and Cristian Javier into extended use. The next scheduled start for Imai would be against the division‑leading Texas Rangers, but his future on the mound remains in doubt.
