Houston defeats Southern 77-6 in lopsided college football matchup

Southern University suffered a decisive 77-6 defeat against No. 22 Houston at TDECU Stadium. The mismatch was so significant that the teams agreed to skip the final eight minutes of the fourth quarter.

Southern head coach Marshall Faulk described the performance as ‘awful,’ characterizing the matchup as a ‘preseason crash dummy test’ for Houston to practice their plays. Houston dominated the contest, leading 49-0 at halftime and finishing with 591 total yards compared to Southern's 121. The Cougars utilized 99 players during the game, including 36 players making their college debuts.

The lopsided result has reignited discussions regarding the value of money games involving Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) playing against FBS opponents. Southern, an FCS program, received $450,000 for the matchup.
