Houston ICE Shooting Investigation Draws DOJ Criticism

In Houston, ICE officers shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo during an immigration enforcement operation. FBI agents later reported seeing transparent plastic bags containing a white, crystal‑like material in the vehicle and obtained a search warrant alleging the substance could be methamphetamine. The warrant’s confidentiality was lifted while the investigation was ongoing, prompting former federal prosecutors to label the move “absolutely abnormal.”

Family attorney Ruby Powers argued the bags contained only granulated salt used as an electrolyte mixture, not drugs, and community leaders accused federal investigators of trying to sway public opinion and a local jury. Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare said the FBI’s findings did not prove the presence of a controlled substance, and the Department of Homeland Security has not yet commented on whether agents knew about any drug during the fatal encounter.
