Houston leads U.S. metropolitan areas in road-rage shootings
Houston has recorded more road-rage shootings than any other U.S. metropolitan area over an 11-year period. According to data from The Trace and the Gun Violence Archive, the Houston area saw 267 road-rage shootings between 2014 and 2024, resulting in 76 deaths.
Across the state, Texas led the nation with 604 shootings and 172 deaths during the same timeframe. The findings follow a recent incident in Cypress, where a 5-year-old was killed in a roadway shooting; a suspect has been charged with capital murder in connection to the event.
In response to such violence, Texas lawmakers implemented Senate Bill 3031, effective September 1, 2025. The law expands the criteria for first-degree felony aggravated assault when a firearm is discharged from or while traveling to or from a motor vehicle, carrying potential penalties of five to 99 years or life in prison.
