Houston police investigate new body discoveries in city bayous
Houston police are investigating the discovery of three additional bodies found in city bayous over the past month. These findings follow a period in which 34 bodies were recovered from Houston waterways last year. Data from the Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office indicates that at least 201 bodies have been found in the city’s bayous since 2017.
The most recent discoveries include the body of 33-year-old Yvonne Lopez, found near Sims Bayou on July 29; her body had been partially burned. A man’s body was found floating in Brays Bayou on August 10, and a third body, in a state of advanced decomposition with no obvious signs of trauma, was found near Buffalo Bayou on August 11.
While social media speculation has suggested the presence of a serial killer, officials have denied these claims. Houston Mayor John Whitmire previously addressed the issue, stating there is no evidence of a serial killer and attributing the deaths to factors such as illness, accidents, and the realities of the homeless population.
