Houston Restaurateur Matthew Mitchell Sued Over 2026 Murder‑Suicide of Family

On May 4, 2026, Houston restaurateur Thy Mitchell and her two children, Maya (8) and Max (4), were killed in an apparent murder‑suicide at their River Oaks home. Police said Matthew Mitchell, Thy’s husband, shot the family before turning the gun on himself. The Harris County medical examiner ruled the deaths of Thy and the children as homicides, while Matthew’s death was self‑inflicted.

Thy’s parents, Thuy Mai and Lan Huong Tran, filed a lawsuit in Harris County probate court accusing Matthew of planning the killings to avoid shame from financial failure and alleged fraud. Citing Ring security‑camera video, the suit seeks wrongful‑death damages, punitive damages and a court‑imposed trust over Matthew’s estate, alleging he transferred $1.4 million to conceal assets. The lawsuit also aims to prevent further allocation of estate funds to the family’s restaurants, Traveler’s Cart and Traveler’s Table, the former of which announced it will close.
