Houston teacher expresses distress over student literacy levels

Darius Williams, a teacher at Wheatley High School in the Houston Independent School District, has gained widespread attention after posting a video expressing his distress over the literacy levels of his senior students. Williams reported that during the second day of the school year, 17- and 18-year-old students struggled to complete a basic writing exercise, failing to fill in just four words of a sentence he had largely prepared for them.

Williams noted that while the students are capable of verbal reasoning and defending their ideas orally, they struggle significantly to translate those thoughts into written text. The teacher’s emotional reaction on social media drew both sympathy and criticism. Some users questioned his professional qualifications, prompting Williams to defend his credentials, which include a degree from Berklee College of Music and enrollment in a master’s program for Curriculum and Instruction.

A spokesperson for the Houston Independent School District acknowledged the issue, stating that the district is aware that some students enter high school with significant gaps in their learning and is working to provide support to help them prepare for college and careers.
