Houston voters face marijuana policy and local legislative races

As the November 3 election approaches, Houston-area voters face several significant local and state-level decisions. One key measure, Proposition A, was placed on the ballot by the nonprofit Ground Game Texas after gathering approximately 40,000 signatures. If passed, the proposition would direct the Houston Police Department to treat misdemeanor marijuana possession as its “lowest law-enforcement priority.” While marijuana remains illegal under Texas state law, proponents state the measure aims to guide how the city allocates its specific resources.

Simultaneously, several LGBTQ candidates are campaigning for various offices in the region. These include state Representatives Ann Johnson and Jolanda Jones, who are seeking re-election to the Texas House, as well as Michelle Palmer for the State Board of Education. Other candidates, including Chris Ehlinger, Jourdyn Wilson, and Jesus Nieto, are running for the Harris Central Appraisal District. These races involve oversight of public education, property appraisals, and civil rights protections.
