Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport hit by Houthi missile attacks
King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh has suspended operations following a series of deadly missile and drone attacks attributed to Houthi rebels from Yemen. A major strike on Saturday resulted in at least 12 to 13 deaths and over 300 injuries. A subsequent attack on Sunday caused at least one additional fatality and multiple injuries.
In response to the escalating violence, Saudi authorities have extended the airport's closure until October 17 to conduct safety inspections. The attacks have caused significant disruption to regional aviation, with major carriers including Lufthansa Group, Air France-KLM, and Etihad Airways canceling or suspending flights to Riyadh. International aviation agencies, including the US FAA and EASA, have issued warnings to airlines regarding the use of Saudi airspace.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree has threatened further strikes against Saudi Aramco facilities in Dammam and Riyadh, as well as other airports, should the Saudi-led coalition proceed with military operations in Sanaa. Meanwhile, Saudi officials have warned that filming or sharing information regarding missile interceptions or strike locations will result in legal action and potential arrest.
