Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen raise fuel prices by up to 21%

Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen have implemented significant increases in petroleum derivative prices, with hikes ranging between approximately 16% and 21%. Specifically, the price of a 20-liter container of gasoline rose by about 16.67%, while diesel saw a larger increase of approximately 21.05%.

Local authorities attributed the price adjustments to rising global energy costs. However, residents and activists have expressed widespread anger and skepticism, questioning the pricing mechanisms used by the local oil company. Critics have also noted a decline in fuel quality and pointed out that stations are applying new prices to existing stock purchased at older rates.

The price increase is expected to trigger broader inflation across the transport, food, water, and electricity sectors, further straining the purchasing power of citizens already facing a severe economic and humanitarian crisis.
