Houthi-linked influencer used Brazilian AI for military data
Wissam Maarouf, a digital influencer with ties to the Houthi movement in Yemen, used an artificial intelligence tool developed by the Brazilian company eesier to gather military-related information. The tool, which allowed users to conduct internet searches directly within WhatsApp, was reportedly used to monitor military incidents, locate vessel routes, and obtain detailed reports on attacks in the Red Sea.
Eesier blocked Maarouf's access after detecting a volume of queries significantly higher than normal behavior and identifying the searches as suspicious. Maarouf, based in Sanaa, uses social media platforms to share military content related to Houthi operations, including strategic control of routes such as the Taiz-Aden road. While he is a prominent digital figure, it remains unclear if he holds an official leadership position within the Houthi group.
