Houthi rebels from Yemen launched a series of ballistic missile and drone attacks targeting the Saudi Arabian capital, Riyadh, and energy infrastructure in Yanbu on the Red Sea coast. Saudi air defenses successfully intercepted a ballistic missile aimed at Riyadh, though explosions and large plumes of black smoke were observed near King Khalid International Airport, where a fuel tank belonging to Saudi Aramco reportedly caught fire.

The Saudi-led coalition stated that air defenses also thwarted attempted attacks on civilian infrastructure in the cities of Bish, Taif, Farasan, and Yanbu. The Houthis claimed the operations were a response to recent Saudi military strikes in Sanaa and were intended to hit “sensitive targets.”

The U.S. State Department has warned of the potential for rapid escalation in the region, urging Americans to exercise heightened vigilance and reconsider travel to and through the Middle East due to possible flight cancellations and airspace closures. The escalation has raised significant concerns regarding global energy security and maritime stability in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
