Houthi and Al-Shabaab alliance poses global security threat
Security officials from the United States and Somalia have identified a deepening alliance between Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels and the Al-Qaeda-affiliated group Al-Shabaab. This partnership, which has been active since at least 2023, involves the exchange of weapons, military training, and tactical expertise.
Reports indicate that Jibril “One-Armed” Yahya Ali served as a critical liaison between the two groups, facilitating the procurement and shipment of military-grade weapons. Although a U.S. airstrike killed Ali in February, officials warn that cooperation continues. Al-Shabaab has reportedly requested advanced equipment, including anti-aircraft missiles, explosive drones, and night-vision gear.
U.S. Africa Command General Dagvin Anderson noted that the alliance poses global risks, as it could destabilize the Gulf of Aden, a vital maritime corridor for global energy flows and shipping. The connection is reportedly bridged by a shared hostility toward the West and Israel, allowing the Sunni Al-Shabaab and Shia Houthis to overcome traditional sectarian divides.
