Iran's draft Hormuz bill drives oil price surge FAST-MOVING

Iran's parliament is reviewing a draft law that would bar U.S., Israeli and other vessels deemed hostile from transiting the Strait of Hormuz and impose fines of up to 20 % of a ship’s cargo value. Iran is also seeking a transit fee of 5‑7 % of the cargo price, while Oman is discussing a fee of about 3 % and the United States has said it opposes any new fees.

The proposed restrictions have lifted Brent crude futures to roughly $83.48 a barrel and U.S. West Texas Intermediate to about $78.84 a barrel, pushing oil prices up 1‑2 % in early August. At the same time, vessel traffic through the strait fell to 33 ships from Monday to Thursday, down from 50 the week before, as shippers await a resolution to the Iran‑Oman talks.

Earlier in the week, Yemen’s Iran‑aligned Houthi rebels claimed a missile attack on a Saudi oil tanker off Yanbu, which also contributed to the price rise. Markets remain cautious, noting that about one‑fifth of global oil and LNG shipments passed through the Hormuz corridor before the war began.
