Houthis allegedly demand $51 billion and recognition from Saudi Arabia

The Wall Street Journal has reported that Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement has demanded $51 billion in compensation and formal recognition as the legitimate rulers of Yemen in exchange for ending hostilities with Saudi Arabia. The reported demands emerged as Riyadh sought to explore a negotiated end to the conflict following Houthi attacks on maritime shipping in the Red Sea and the seizure of strategic territory near the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

Saudi Arabia has categorically denied these claims. Rayed Krimly, the Saudi Deputy Minister for Public Diplomacy, stated that the report is baseless and described the allegations as fabrications by the newspaper’s writers or their sources. He emphasized that Yemen already has an internationally recognized government.

While the $51 billion figure was specifically cited, reports suggest that any potential financial settlement could involve tens of billions of dollars. A journalist close to the Houthi movement disputed the reported figures, alleging that the compensation sought is intended for the Yemeni people to cover war losses estimated at $1.13 trillion, rather than for the movement itself.
