Houtribdijk weight restrictions spark calls for increase

Transport and Logistics Netherlands (TLN) is urging Rijkswaterstaat to increase the weight limit on the Houtribdijk, which connects Enkhuizen and Lelystad, from 15 to at least 20 tons. The current restrictions, which include a 7.3-ton axle load limit, were implemented on October 21 to prevent further damage to the aging Houtrib bridges.

Heavy vehicles exceeding these limits must currently detour via Amsterdam or the Afsluitdijk, leading to increased fuel costs, longer driving hours, and logistical disruptions. TLN has provided data on common vehicle configurations, suggesting that a 20-ton limit would allow many agro-transport and retail distribution vehicles to pass while remaining within safe axle load limits.

Local stakeholders, including school transport representatives, have expressed concerns regarding the impact of these detours on community services. While Rijkswaterstaat investigates the possibility of a temporary emergency bridge, the renovation of the bridges and locks is estimated to cost approximately 250 million euros and may take several years.
