How to Keep Hydrangeas Healthy During Croatia’s Summer Heat

Gardeners are advised to protect large‑leaf hydrangeas from drought and high temperatures by watering the soil deeply rather than the foliage. Soil should stay moist to the depth of a second finger joint; if dry, water thoroughly and re‑check after a few hours. Over‑watering in direct sun can push out essential oxygen from the roots, so avoid applying water while the ground is scorching.

Applying a layer of compost or mulch around the base helps retain moisture and shields roots from rapid drying. During heat waves, fertiliser should be omitted because it encourages new growth that the plant cannot sustain under stress. Selecting shade‑tolerant varieties such as oak‑leaf hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia) and planting them in locations that receive afternoon shade or filtered light further reduces heat stress.
