How to Safely Clean Dishwashers and Washing Machines

Better Homes & Gardens identified six unconventional items that can be placed in a dishwasher, including refrigerator shelves, kitchen exhaust filters, pet food bowls, pet chew toys, trash‑bin lid caps and shower‑organiser toys, provided they fit the rack and are washed on a separate cycle.

A separate guide explains that unpleasant odors in washing machines stem from trapped moisture and detergent residue, especially in front‑load models. Recommended cleaning steps are: gently wipe the door gasket with a warm‑vinegar solution; run an empty high‑temperature wash (90 °C) once a month using white vinegar or a commercial cleaner; optionally use a baking‑soda paste to neutralise smells; clean the detergent drawer by soaking it in hot, soapy water; remove and rinse the filter at the bottom of the machine; and leave the door and drawer open after each use to allow drying.
