How to Safely Release Trapped Possums and Keep Them Hydrated

When a possum is caught in a trap, the first priority is safety. Wear thick gloves and keep children and pets away while assessing the animal’s condition. Check local wildlife regulations before moving the possum, then choose a quiet, wooded release site within a few hundred feet of the capture point, preferably at dusk or nightfall. Open the trap slowly, facing away from you, and allow the possum to exit on its own.

Possums are prone to dehydration, especially in hot, dry conditions or when their natural water sources are scarce. Signs include lethargy, sunken eyes, and dry skin. Provide fresh water in a shallow container, using clean water and avoiding electrolytes unless advised by a veterinarian. Place the water source away from areas that might attract other unwanted animals. Regularly change the water to prevent contamination and support the possum’s health.
