Howard University drops over 500 incoming freshmen over missed tuition deadlines

Howard University announced that 502 first‑year students were unenrolled after their accounts failed to meet enrollment and financial obligations by the July 10 deadline. The students, who were set to begin the fall semester on Aug. 17, either had not paid half of their remaining balance or had not enrolled in a payment plan. Many reported that scholarships or federal aid had not been processed in time.

The university said each case will be reviewed individually and that students who believe their accounts were inaccurate should contact the Bursar’s Office. Howard, a historically Black university with about 11,000 undergraduates, charges roughly $38,000 in annual tuition plus $13,600 for on‑campus housing. The sudden loss of spots left the affected students scrambling for alternatives just weeks before move‑in.
