Howard University reinstates hundreds of disenrolled students

Howard University abruptly cancelled admission for more than 500 incoming freshmen after tuition‑payment deadlines were missed, sparking national outrage. After a review of updated financial‑aid documents, the university reinstated over 200 of the affected students. Interim president Dr. Wayne A. I. Frederick said the school “didn’t make a mistake” and that the reinstatements resulted from students completing payments, verifying scholarships, loans, or veterans’ benefits.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that eligible New York residents who were among the disenrolled cohort can apply for expedited admission to participating SUNY and CUNY campuses, using space in existing fall‑2026 classes. Hochul said, “Hundreds of students, including New Yorkers, are scrambling and scared since they’ve been disenrolled from their intended college just a few weeks before classes are set to begin.” Maryland Governor Wes Moore also pledged assistance, including an $800 credit for affected students. The coordinated response aims to keep students on track academically while expanding access to affordable public higher education.
