Howard University Unenrolls 500 Freshmen Over Tuition Deadline

More than 500 incoming first‑year students at Howard University were notified on July 22 that they had been unenrolled from the Class of 2030 because they missed a July 10 deadline to pay tuition or arrange a payment plan. The university says the deadline required at least a 50 % tuition payment, and students who did not meet it could no longer be held in the arriving class that starts on August 17, 2026.

Many affected students say they were awaiting scholarships, military benefits or other aid that would not post to their accounts until August, and they describe the removal as a mistake. One student, Isabella Williams, said she had been preparing to drive from Alabama when the email arrived, adding, “For us to suddenly be dropped from the university of our dreams is heartbreaking.” Kendra Miles, whose daughter was unenrolled, told reporters, “I’ve reached out since we got the email, I’ve emailed everybody.”

Howard University issued a statement acknowledging the “difficult and disappointing” update, noting that it had sent multiple reminders via email, personalized financial‑aid information, videos and prep sessions from March through July. The school said it would review individual cases involving pending scholarships and that any tuition or scholarship payments already made would be refunded, while the $800 deposit required for housing is non‑refundable. The controversy has sparked widespread social‑media backlash and prompted calls for clearer communication from the administration.
