Howard Webb criticizes Balogun suspension controversy

Howard Webb, head of the English Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), has expressed deep concern regarding the controversy surrounding US striker Folarin Balogun during the World Cup. Balogun was originally sent off during a Round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, but his suspension was delayed, allowing him to play in the subsequent match against Belgium.

It was later revealed that US President Donald Trump had contacted FIFA leadership in an attempt to make Balogun eligible for the next game. While FIFA President Gianni Infantino maintained the process was independent, reports indicated the panel involved had only one official.

Webb stated that the incident is “really troubling” and fears it will create a “snowball effect” where fans and social media users view officiating decisions as corrupt rather than simply incorrect. He warned that such political interventions open the door for conspiracy theories that could impact the perception of referees in other leagues, including the Premier League.
