Howden historic market cross destroyed in vehicle collision
A historic 16-foot market cross in Howden, East Yorkshire, was demolished after a gold Range Rover crashed into the monument on Thursday morning. The collision occurred at approximately 10:30 am near the Shire Hall in the town centre.
Emergency services attended the scene, where the vehicle was left perched on the base of the wrecked structure. While one pedestrian was reportedly taken to the hospital, Humberside Police confirmed that no serious injuries were sustained.
Local councillor David Howard described the landmark as being “in a real mess” and noted the need to secure the site and conserve as much of the structure as possible. While some believe parts of the cross may be medieval, heritage records indicate the 16-foot-high cross was erected in 1909, though the base may date back to the medieval period.
