Howell Township Schools ban metal and glass water bottles
Howell Township Public Schools in Monmouth County has announced a ban on metal and glass beverage containers, effective for the 2026-27 school year. While plastic bottles will remain permitted, students will no longer be allowed to bring stainless steel bottles or glass tumblers to school.
Superintendent Joseph Isola and Board of Education President Jennifer Okerson cited student and staff safety as the primary reason for the policy change. District officials stated that metal and glass containers can pose a danger during student altercations because they are heavy, rigid objects that could cause injury if thrown or swung.
The decision has met resistance from some parents, leading to an online petition with over 1,100 signatures requesting that the district reverse the ban. Opponents of the rule have raised concerns regarding its environmental impact.
