Howell Township schools reverse metal water bottle ban

Howell Township Public Schools in Monmouth County, New Jersey, has reversed a decision to ban metal and stainless steel water bottles following significant backlash from parents.

The district originally announced that rigid, heavy containers such as metal and glass bottles, tumblers, and cups would be prohibited in school buildings and on buses starting in the 2026-27 school year. Officials stated the measure was intended to “support the safety of our students and staff and reduce the risk of injury,” noting that such objects could cause harm if used during student altercations.

The proposal triggered a protest involving an online petition signed by over 1,000 people. Opponents argued the ban would increase environmental waste by discouraging the use of durable reusable bottles and pushing students toward single-use plastics. Some parents also raised concerns regarding the potential for chemical leaching from plastic alternatives.

Superintendent Joseph Isola announced that the district has “refined” the policy after considering community feedback. While maintaining a focus on a safe school environment, the district will now allow the use of metal and stainless steel containers.
